As a patient who was fortunate to recover from 20 years of chronic illness, I will say the key is not the naming of the disease and prescribing the standard treatments to alleviate symptoms, but the skills of the physician in uncovering and treating the multiple, overlapping and synergistic causes. Done right, the physician and patient begin to fix the underlying systems, and instead of managing chronic conditions or a magic bullet cure, restore healthy functioning. This takes a wise physician indeed.
