Absolutely agree that hospitals must do a better job explaining to the public all that we do, and yes, there is opportunity to “lean out” our organizations. That said, the years of consistent underfunding, especially for small and rural hospitals has pushed many to the edge of insolvency. With declining volumes in rural communities, growth is not enough to bridge the fee for service gaps many experience. Swift action from leaders and regulators is necessary to avoid a crisis that is in plain sight, lest we lose a vital source of healthcare and much more in our rural communities.
